WIP Wednesday!

Woohoo!  I remembered to do a WIP Wednesday!  I only have two projects that I'm working on right now.  Both projects are ones that I've pulled out from being snoozed.

First up is my Mini Granny Square Scarf.  I got the inspiration two years ago from http://cocorosetextiles.blogspot.com/.  Here scarf is shown in here post here.

My colors have changed slightly, but here's where I am:

Its nice to have a project that is very portable.

The next project I have been working on is my Dad's blanket.  Hear that Dad?!  I worked on it!  You still won't get it though for another couple of years.  You're just too tall!

My gauge has changed as I have been working on this.  It should block out fine though.

I've linked up with Tami's Amis!

I'll try to show you my finished items on Friday.

WIP Wednesday - Shawl, Socks, and Baby Blanket

I have three different WIPs that I have been working on.  There's actually more, but they are snoozed on Ravelry, so I don't count them.

First up are Dave's socks.  I made him a pair a while ago, FO page here.  I decided to start him a second pair when I traded some yarn.  In a trade I received this:

I loved the blue, green, and brown together.  It is MacKintosh Celtic Sock in color Frog Pond.

I have more done of the socks, but this is the latest picture I have:

I'm actually almost to the heels.  These are the first socks that I'm doing two at a time on two circular needles.  I can see how easy it would be to do two at a time on one circular with magic loop as well.  Don't be afraid of socks!  They are really easy.

The next project I have been working on is for myself and it is the pattern Happy Street.  I am using Wollmeise yarn and Spacecadet yarn.  My ravelry project page is here.

I can't wait to finish this.  In the picture I was working on the 5th stripe out of 10.  Now I had just finihsed my 8th stripe.  I'm SO CLOSE!

I haven't been working on my Happy Street as much as I normally would because I'm working on a blanket for my soon to be nephew, Owen.  My sister really liked this baby blanket I made for her best friend's baby.  It was all over my blog last year as my Little Square Baby Blanket.

The theme to Owen's nursery is all around the bedding that my sister and her husband chose:

So these are the colors I chose for his little square blanket:

I'm using Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino yarn.  I have all 168 squares complete and I'm working on seaming the squares together.

I'm using the seam that is in this pattern, 124-1 Bohemian Oasis - Crochet blanket in ”Delight” and ”Fabel”.  I'm really trying to get this blanket done by the shower, which is August 11th.  I have about 25 days left!

For the first time in forever I actually have a WIP post, so I've linked up with Tami's Amis.

WIP Wednesday and an Update

Holy smokes!  Its been a month since I posted!!  My life has been pretty hectic.

This guy has completely come out of his shell and is absolutely adorable:

Toby does the head tilt when you whistle at him.

He likes to scatter his toys all across the floor and grab towels as well.

He has been added to my wall at work.

His carrot is his favorite toy.

He loves to just chill outside.  He'll just sit there and look around.

He loves to visit his brother George at my parents house.

He was neutered last week and this was the only position he felt comfortable on day one.  The cone head was driving us all nuts because he couldn't play or eat or do anything with it on.  If it took it off he tried to lick his stitches.  My parents neighbor had a suggestion and the vet said it was perfect.

We put him in a baby's onesy.  He fits in about a 3-6 mo size.  We put it on him backwards so that the front is on his back.  That way it snaps right around his tail.  He can run around and play, eat and drink, and no licking of the stitches!!!  It works so well and he doesn't mind having it on.  The stitch comes out on Sunday and then he won't have to wear it.

Toby has now taken over my wall at work.

Toby spent the weekend with my parents because I was on a trip.  My dad kept teasing my that I wasn't getting my dog back because Toby was snuggling with him.

Too many dog pictures?  Get on with the WIP pictures? Will do.

So what have I been working on this past month.

First up, Drops Blankets:

I have 4 more squares done.  That's it, just 4 more.  Here's the other 10 I showed you before:

Next project is my Little Square Baby Girl Blanket:

 That's right, one more square.

So you are probably wondering, what have you been working on?

Next project is my Linen Stitch Scarf:

One row of this scarf takes me about an hour.  I've been working on this a lot, but it is slow going.

Next project that I've been working on, but not as much as my Linen Stitch is my Diamond Sock:

I don't work on this too often because I have to concentrate to not mess up the pattern.  I had to set it down one day when Dave started to talk to me.

Nest and final project is my Infinity Scarf.  I have been spending a lot of time on this one:

I am in the middle of my 3rd skein of yarn and I am going to use 5.

Now back on August 2nd, I showed you a blanket I started for my dad.

I've been having second thoughts about the pattern.  I didn't like how loose it looked and felt.  I even went down two hook sizes and the very tall stitches, the trebles, just seemed like a toe could push through.  That is a requirement from my dad by the way, no holes that toes could push through.  So, I started an Oblong Wooleater.

Check out the pattern pages and help me out Wavy Blanky and Oblong Wool Eater, which would you choose?

Since I'm working on so many projects I've just linked up the names of the projects with my ravelry pages if you want to know any details.

I've linked up with Tami's Amis, Small Things, and Frontier Dreams.

Sorry this was so long.  I felt like I had to catch you up on everything......okay maybe I was just gusing about my puppy with a ton a pictures.

FO Friday - My Ripple!!!!!!!!

I've finally finished it!  My ripple is complete!!!  Want to see?

It ended up being 52"x76" (132 x 193cm)!!!!  As you can see above, I can lay on the couch and be completely covered!!!!

I'm so excited that its done.

I did a very simple border.  Who knows, I may add to it later.

I struggled to get a full picture of it on the floor, but here's my best shot.

Look at all the color!!  I love it!

What do you think?  I love it!  I started it in January, so this blanket is the biggest and took me the longest.

Details:
Pattern:  Neat Ripple Pattern
Yarn:  Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino
Colors:  All listed on my project page, here
Size:  52"x76" (132 x 193cm)

May Mosaic

May flew by and not a lot of crafting was done.  Many of you know that my bf, Dave, has colon cancer.  I told you a few weeks ago that it has spread to his liver.  We now have surgery tentatively planned for July 20th.  He's starting another round of chemotherapy today.  His mom and his 11yr old sister are staying with us for most of the summer and I'm glad they are here.

Here's my May mosaic:

June is looking to be a really good month.

I still have to show you the giveaway that I won and the yarn that Dave bought me when he got out of the hospital.

WIP Thursday?

I tried really hard to get this post out yesterday, but it just wasn't going to happen.

I have a lot to show you.  My largest bit of progress is actually on my knit vest.

I have the whole back piece finished:

I also have a good portion of the front done:

I know this last part of my ripple has been dragging and it has for me too.  Right now I'm working on the border:

I have two rounds left to go and then I am finished!

I started a new project last week and I actually started it a bunch of times.  I just couldn't get it right at first.  The project is a shawl, the whippoorwill, to be exact.  This is all I have done right now:

I'm using my Wollmeise yarn and it is gorgeous.

Don't forget to check out everyone else's WIPs over at Tami's Amis, Small Things, and Frontier Dreams.

Kitchen Towel Topper Tutorial

Hi Everyone!!

I have been asked a few times how I make my Kitchen Towel Toppers:
The crocheted top I use is fashioned after the top of Laurie Laliberte's (over at Big Girl Blog) hanging kitchen towel patterns (I have most of them), so I asked her if she minded if I created a tutorial and I use her pattern for reference.  Her idea was for me to do a guest post on her blog.  You can see it here.

I have made these using worsted weight yarn and dk weight yarn.  I think you could easily adapt it for other weights as well.

Materials needed to start:

  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Towel
  • Needle (I use a tapestry needle, but that means I need a thimble to push it through sometimes)

First thing you need to do is cut the towel in half. You really only need one half of the towel and on the plus side you get more for your money!

I don’t really worry about this being perfectly straight because in the end it is going to be somewhat gathered.

After the cut is made, thread your needle with a long piece of yarn.  I now make mine really long because one time I made it too short and had to redo it and that was not fun.

Next you want to fold down the top of the towel like so:

Folding the towel down like this makes it so you don’t have any raw edge exposed.

Next we want to put the needle through so that the knot is on the edge in the back.

Then we want to start doing the blanket stitch (youtube tutorial found here) across the top of the towel.  Make sure to continue to fold the very top down so the cut edge is not exposed.  You can pin this edge if you want to make it easier for you.

Here’s how mine looks from the back with the top folded down.

Once you have gone all the way across make sure you knot it in the back.

We are going to put one sc in each blanket stitch, so make sure to keep the stitches fairly close together.  Although the thicker the yarn you use the farther apart the stitches can be.  I am using dk yarn in this example.  If your stitches are too far apart you could always put more than one sc in each blanket stitch.

Now you can start doing sc across the blanket stitch.  I use a larger hook than recommended for the yarn with these, but it is all what you are comfortable with.

Now once you get to the end just chain one and do a few more sc rows.  For worsted weight I tend to do 4 rows, but for this example in dk I did 5 rows.

If it starts to pull in a little that is okay.  We are going to start gathering it and decreasing anyway.
This is where I start to use Laurie’s pattern (Free Big Girl Kitchen Towel).  We want to sc dec

(A sc dec is insert hook into both loops of first stitch being worked, yo, pull up a loop, insert hook into both loops of next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw through all 3 loops on hook)

over the next few rows to get down to 6 stitches.  Now this all depends on how many stitches you have.  In this example I have 54 stitches.

So first row I just do sc dec all the way across and I end up with 27 stitches.

Next I sc dec 7 times, 1 sc, sc dec 6 times to get to 14 stitches.

Then I did sc dec 2 twice, dec over 3 stitches twice, then sc dec twice to get down to 6 stitches.

(dec over 3 stitches is insert hook into both loops of first stitch being worked, yo, pull up a loop, insert hook into both loops of next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, insert hook into both loops of next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw through all 4 loops on hook)

Once down to 6 stitches, chain one and sc across.

Continue making the 6 stitch rows

I did about 20 rows.

Next, once it is long enough you will do the row that will become your button hole.

From Laurie’s pattern:

Note:  Before proceeding, you may wish to fit your hanging loop to the place where you'd like it to hang.  If worked as instructed it will fit the average drawer pull or oven door handle.  If you need to add length simply continue repeating Row 64 as necessary.

Row 82:  ch3 (counts as dc), trc in next st, dtrc in next 2 sts, trc in next st, dc in next st, turn (6 sts)

Note:  The space between the two dtrc is your buttonhole.

Next you want to chain one and sc in the first two sts, two sc in each of the next two sts, and then sc in the last two sts, do not bind off.

Next, you want to sc down the side and stop right where you started the decreases.

Fasten off, then start on the other side where the decreases started.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Sew on a button of your choice.

So, there you have it!  Let me know if you have any questions.
